Social Media – getting started guide
Social media – get your business working online – Part 1 !
Like it or not, you are going to quickly come to the conclusion that sooner or later your business is going to need a social media presence. It’s no longer enough to have a website anymore. You need to start engaging with your customers and marketing your services to them in a more direct environment.
Attend any kind of business seminar, ‘start your own business’ course or marketing group and you’ll soon hear all the buzz words. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN, YouTube. We could go on! It can be a daunting world if you’re not ‘tech-savvy’ or of the so called smart phone generation. Our advice – start small and work on it every day.
Start with (the) Twitter!
Twitter is probably the quickest and easiest place to start. Stick with it and you will soon see how powerful a tool it can be.
Open up a browser on you PC or Mac and go to twitter.com and signup – all you need is an email address. Give yourself a decent username which closely resembles your business name. Twitter will suggest users for you to follow, pick one or two to see how it works. You will start seeing these users tweets in your ‘twitter feed’. OK, you’re ready to send your first tweet! Make it interesting and relevant if you can! Send out a link to your business website for starters.
Upload a small image or photo as your ‘profile picture’, update your location and description to give people a bit more of an idea of who you are. Take some time to see how other users in your line of business are using it.
Stick with it
Keep tweeting every day, if you run a restaurant start tweeting about specials. Start following other businesses in your area, and those of relevance to you. Chances are they will start following you back and the cycle will begin.
Twitter was designed to be used ‘on the go’. If you have a smart phone download a Twitter app and get logged on. You’ll be able to send a tweet out quicker than you can send a text. Take a picture of some new stock which just arrived into your shop and send it out to your followers in a matter of moments.
.. you get the picture.
